Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt is the SP''s candidate from Lucknow

Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt will contest the 2009 general elections on a Samajwadi Party (SP) ticket. Fellow actor and Bhojpuri film star Manoj Tiwari will also contest the polls from the same party.

Samajwadi Party General Secretary Amar Singh told mediapersons on Thursday, said that if Dutt was disallowed from contesting the elections because of the criminal cases against him, the party would move the Election Commission or the Supreme Court.

"Dutt told me you are like my elder brother. He said he would do anything I ask him to though he said he was not a political person," said the SP general secretary.

The constituency is currently represented by former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Dutt, who is facing a six-year sentence in the 1993 bomb blasts case, has approached the Supreme Court for an acquittal.

Tiwari said that party president Mulayam Singh Yadav had asked him to contest the polls from Gorakhpur. (ANI)

Central Government orders inspection of eight Satyam subsidiaries

The Central Government on Thursday ordered a probe into the books of accounts of eight subsidiaries of Satyam Computer Services, a day after the company''s former chairman and managing director, B Ramalinga Raju, admitted that the company had forged accounts.

The inspection would be conducted as per the provisions of Section 209A of the Companies Act, Corporate Affairs Minister Prem Chand Gupta told reporters on Thursday.

The subsidiaries, whose accounts will be verified by the government, are Maytas Properties, Maytas Infrastructure, Satyam BPO, Nipuna Services, Knowledge Dynamics, Nitor Global Solutions, Ca Satyam ASP and Satyam Venture Engineering Services.

Meanwhile in Hyderabad, company officials admitted that the firm''s liquidity position was not motivating enough, and that the management is exploring other avenues of liquidity.

Satyam''s interim Chief Executive Officer, Ram Mynampati, told a press conference in the city that the liquidity position of the company was not encouraging.He, however, declared that receivables position was healthy.

The company has started the process of verifying its financials and liquidity position, Mynampati said, adding that it "has been reaching out to all regulatory bodies."

Replying to a query about the composition of a new board following the spate of resignations after the embarrassing Rs. 7,106 crore fraud, Mynampati told mediapersons here that the company has started looking for new board members.

Mynampati, however, said that the company was aiming at measures to ensure that business continued as usual after revelations of financial irregularities by Chairman B Ramalinga Raju.

The company is reaching out to the top clients who make up the bulk of its revenues. "We are also reaching out to 50,000 employees to protect them," he added.

Mynampati also informed that he and other board members relied on auditor reports, and therefore, were unaware of the extent of the fraud.

"I am even shocked by disclosures and severity of issues," he said.

Mynampati categorically denied having any relations with the promoter family of Satyam. (ANI)

Surrendered militants resort to hunger strike in Manipur

Surrendered militants staged a hunger strike here on Wednesday over demands for proper rehabilitation and jobs.

Around 37 activists belonging to groups like the People''s Liberation Army (PLA) and the Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP) participated in the hunger strike.

The former insurgents claimed that they had been evicted by the police and civic officials from a relief camp that was once occupied by the Second Commando Battalion of the Manipur Police.

The authorities, however,contend that the site was earmarked as staff quarters for the police personnel.

"Eighty-four people used to stay together over here, out of which 47 people got the appointment (job) letters. But 37 persons are yet to receive any appointment letter. We want the Government to rehabilitate all of us. We want to lead a secure life with our family. We will be sitting here till the time the Government fulfills our demands," said Mohammed Jalaluddin, a former member of the KCP.

"We are facing a difficult time. We expect that the Government should come forward to help us. We want the Government to arrange a place for us where we can live safely," added M. Somi Singh, a surrendered PLA militant.

The former insurgents pointed out that the authorities are yet to comply with the order of the Guwahati High Court of clearing all outstanding stipends due to them within two months.

Snowfall in Gulmarg brings cheer to tourists

Tourists are thronging Gulmarg to revel in its famous snow clad slopes.

Trees, buildings, roads, are all covered in white with snow flakes occasionally falling adding to the joyous atmosphere around.

Tourists from the hot Indian plains are thrilled to see the snowfall, some of them experiencing it for the first time, of course a life time experience for them.

"It seems like heaven everywhere here. I would like to request all the tourists that they should come and see the paradise on earth here," said Manoj Sharma, a tourist.

Foreign tourists are also thronging the snow-clad Gulmarg to make merry on its snowy slopes and were all praise for the people around.

"We would like to invite every Indian to come to Gulmarg. It''s very nice place and you will enjoy life. The thing is that…actually what you have seen before… not only the snow, the place, the people, the culture it''s very nice over here," said Dinesh Patel, a foreign tourist.

Singing, dancing and playing in the snow, the tourists also tried to ski and sledge around on the snow.

About two to three feet deep snowfall in the ski resort has brought back cheer to the tourism industry as well.

"Since it started snowing here, a lot of tourists have started coming here. Wherever you see tourists in Gulmarg they make snowman and play in snow. Then they walk on sledge and get involved in snow sports like skiing," said G M Dar, tourism in-charge, Gulmarg.

Gulmarg is a well known tourist destination for winter activities such as snow boarding, sledge rides, gondola (cable car) and snow skiing.

The tourism authorities of the state are trying their best to woo back snow sport enthusiasts. The gentle slopes in Gulmarg make it the Asia''s only heli-skiing resort. (ANI)

Supreme Court criticizes litigants for using unfair methods for interim relief

The Supreme Court has criticised the popular practice among litigants adopting unfair means to approach courts demanding interim relief only to enjoy its benefits and intentionally spoiling the final scrutiny of the matter.

A Bench comprising Justices R. V. Raveendran and J. M. Panchal said that any attempt by a litigant to retain the benefit of the interim order by avoiding final adjudication, required to be deprecated.

"In fact, it requires to be dealt with sternly," said the Bench.

The apex court pointed out those cases in which litigants approach the court at the last minute for relief with an interim prayer.

Once the interim order is achieved, the litigant makes an innocuous submission to the court that he does not want to press ahead with the petition and gets the matter disposed off, thereby achieving the goal of securing relief without adjudication, the Bench stated.

The Bench, while expressing concern, said that the result of such a practice is that in many cases, a litigant who would not get the relief on detailed scrutiny of his claim during the final hearing, he gets away with the undeserved relief secured by way of an interim order.

The remarks were made while attending to an appeal filed by Abhimanyoo Ram which challenged an Allahabad High Court judgement in a matter related to the selection of government medical officers. (ANI)

In a bid to stay warm in the chilling weather, the two actors heavily drank Lithuanian vodka to keep the cold at bay.

"Our secret for staying warm was vodka. We had lots of good Lithuanian vodka,” Contactmusic quoted Schreiber as telling Parade.com.

He added: “It was very good, so good that we drank a lot of it. I mean we were in the woods and it was freezing.

Supermodel Gisele Bundchen and her footballer beau Tom Brady are not engaged, it has emerged.

According to a source close to the couple, nothing has been made official.

And the supermodel might have to wait a little longer to receive her ring.

"But there is nothing stopping them from getting engaged. It could happen any day," Fox News quoted the source as saying.

It was recently reported that the American footballer had proposed to Budchen on a private jet, decorated with white roses and champagne especially for her.
